Etymology

Smith's Well Wood (6″) is le Smytheswelle 15th WM xxxvi, Snytwell oth. Smitwell oth. Snytefield 1630 WIpm. There was also a Snyteforlong (1341Rental ) in this neighbourhood. It looks as if compounds of OE  snite , 'snipe,' and OE  smiþ , 'smith,' found in names of neighbouring places had in the course of their history been completely confused.
