Etymology

Ekwall (DEPN) derives this name from an OE  mintie , dative of mintēa , 'mint stream,' v. ea and cf. Otter R. (PN D 11–12).If this is so the name must have referred to the small stream a little to the west of the present village. 'At Mintie is an abundance of wild mint' (Aubrey NH 49). There is no very marked hill just here, otherwise one might think of a compound of British *monijo -, 'hill' (Welsh  mynydd , adopted into OE  as myned ), and *tig -, 'house' (Welsh  ty ). Cf. Minehead (DEPN).
