Etymology

Brandier is Brandyres al. Branyrons 1633 WIpm, terra voc. Brandiron 1681Devizes , Brandeers 1773 A and D, 1820 G. Cf. le Brondyre 1540Rental in Highworth, Brandiers 1694Brazenose in Broad Town and Brandiers c. 1840TA in Purton. There can be little doubt that these names contain the word brandier , brandiron , used of a gridiron in Scotland and the North and North Midlands. Not hitherto recorded from the South, it may have reference to a well-ridged field (B.D.).
