Etymology

The interpretation of this name is not easy but the early forms suggest a compound of an OE  *tȳte and hrycg. OE  tȳte would be allied to tote , 'look-out,' now toot , LGer  tūte , Du tuit , used of a snout and various other things that project or thrust themselves forward. Here we have a small ridge projecting into the river valley. Hence perhaps 'projecting ridge.'
