Etymology

Barton Fm is Barton 1198 Abbr, Bertone , Bertona 1211 RBE, 1224 ClR, la Berton 1236 Orig, Berton de Merleberg 1249Ass , Berton Regis 1316 FA. v. beretun . It was the king's manor in DB and continued to be held by the Crown until it passed to the Seymours in the 16th century (H. C. B.). We have similarly a barton , no doubt originally a grange of the king's, outside both Gloucester and Bristol.
