Etymology

Cloatley is Clotleye c. 1250 RegMalm, Clotlee 1257For , Clotlye 1388 Cl, Clotele 1268Ass , t. Ed 3For , Clotelegh ib. 'Clearing or wood where the clote grows,' v. leah . The first element is OE  clāte , 'burdock,' cf. Clothall (PN Herts 155–6). In western dialect clote is used of the yellow water-lily and also of Great Mullein.
