Bishoper

Early-attested site in the Parish of Hankerton

Historical Forms

  • Bissupesberuwe c.1300 Malm
  • Bushiper 1773 AandD

Etymology

Bishoper is Bissupesberuwe c. 1300Malm , Bushiper 1773 A and D. There is hardly any hill here, so it looks very much as if we have to do with a lost barrow (v. beorg infra 423), though why it should have become associated with a bishop it is impossible to say.
