Coldridge Wood

Early-attested site in the Parish of Collingbourne Kingston

Etymology

Coldridge Wood. Cf. Colrigge 1257, bosc. de Colerygge t. Ed 1For . In the will of Aetheling Aethelstan (Anglo -Saxon Wills 56 ff.) mention is made of Colungahrycg . There is no indication where it is, but as the will covers property in neighbouring parts of Hampshire the probability is that Colrigge is a reduced form of Colungahrycg . Hence 'ridge of the people of Cola .' See further infra 368 n. 1 and cf. DBColeburna for Collingbourne supra 342 and Colebourne under Bourne R. supra 2.
