Etymology

Hawk Street Fm and Hawk Street (6″) are Hauekestret 1288, Haukestret 1399Ct , Hawkstreat 1568Add . In the 1288 reference there is mention of one Thomas Hauek , i.e. 'hawk,' and the hamlet probably took its name from his family rather than from the bird. Street is used of a 'straggling hamlet,' v. EDD s. v. and cf. Barrow Street supra 178.
