Etymology

Sugar Hill is Suger Hill (1773 A and D) and must have been near (innan ) sceocera wege 854 (12th) BCS 477, Shuger waie 1591 WM vi, Sugerne Way 1779 Grundy ii. 'The robbers' way or path,' from OE  sceacere , 'robber.' See more fully PN Wa 285, s. n. Sugarswell. The weg is the old road which runs from east to west here along the boundary of Wanborough and Aldbourne.
