Historical Forms

  • Luttewyk 1249 Ass
  • Lodewich' 1270 For

Etymology

Lottage is Luttewyk 1249Ass , Lodewich '1270For , Lotwyk 1281, Lotewych '1289Ass , Lotwych 1509, Lotewiche 1553DuLa .It is tempting, in spite of a good deal of uncertainty in the early forms, to take this name as identical with Lutwyche (Sa) for which Ekwall (DEPN) gives early forms Loteis 1086 DB, Lotwych 1292Ass , quoting the parallel of unidentified Lootwic 717 BCS 137 (Wo). The first element is quite uncertain.
