Etymology
Scalm Park & Scalm Wood [skɔ:m], boscum de Scatholme c. 1225 Selby, Skaholm 1321AddCh 45816, Selby, wood of Skalme 1414 Pat, Scalm 1419 Fabr, silva de Scam 1471 ib, Skawme Park 1662 SelbyW. The first spelling suggests this is 'Skathi's water-meadow', from the ON pers.n. Skaði and holmr , with loss of medial -th - through AN influence (cf. IPN 109). There is nothing in the topography to connect it with ON skáðr 'askew', though it is formally possible.
