Etymology

'Ash wood', v. askr , viðr . The frequent appearance of -wid may be accounted for by AN influence, but it may reflect an earlier OE  widu (an unmutated form of wudu which occurs in some p.ns.); indeed the whole name may be a Scandinavianised form of an OE  æsc -widu , -wudu (cf. Introd.).
