Etymology

'(At) the loft-houses' from ON  í lopt -húsum (dat.pl.), v. lopt-hús, -um ; cf. the local f.n. Loftschoghe (infra ). The origin of the affix is obscure, but it could be the surname Doggett (cf. Roger Doggisheved 1204 FF), distinguishing this place from Arkendale Loftus 104 and Lofthouse 203infra .
