Etymology

The original form of the name appears to be a compound of OE  hǣlig 'holy' and lēah (and doubtless refers to the monks of Pontefract), but it was later adjusted to the form of the common YW p.n. Healey (from hēah , lēah ); cf. High Lee iii, 137infra .
