Etymology

'Herd farm', v. heorde-wīc, in reference to that part of a manor devoted to livestock as distinct from a bere -tūn or arable farm. The spellings with Herthe - may be due to ON influence (cf. IPN 65).'East' and 'South' in relation to West Hardwick and Blind Hardwick 79, 88infra .
