Etymology

'The monks' farmstead', v. munuc , tūn , and Moor Monkton (iv, 257supra ) across the R. Nidd, from which it is distinguished as 'Nun' (v. nunne ) from the priory of nuns founded here in the twelfth century (Dugd iv, 193).
