Newstead, 1698 PRSxt, Newstead near the Lede 1504 FF. 'New place', v. nīwe , stede , doubtless referring to a farmstead erected near the site of an older house, of which traces of the moat and embankment remain. The affix 'the Lede' refers to Lead supra . Newstead is high on the hillside.
