Etymology

'Valley where stakes were got', v. stafir , botn . The DB spelling Stam - may be from ON  stafn 'pole'; the spellings with -botle , etc. are due to AN influence (cf. IPN 107) and the occasional -bottom , -botum to the substitution of OE  botm 'valley bottom'.
