Etymology

'(At) the tree-stumps' from OE  stubbum , dat.pl. of stubb (v. -um ).The identity of the DB berewick of Stube with Stubham (rather than with Stubbing in Otley iv, 205supra , as suggested by Skaife) need not be in doubt; it was in Gereburg Wapentake which comprised the archbishop's manor of Otley north of the R. Wharfe (1supra ).
