Etymology

'High forest-glade or clearing', v. hēah , lēah . The land hereabout is low-lying but rises to 100 feet at Healaugh. The forms of the final el. are paralleled by those of Helmesley and Healaugh YN 71, 274; they have perhaps been influenced by haga 'enclosure', or even ON  lǫg 'law-district'. Healaugh Park, now Healaugh Manor Fm, is the site of an abbey, also called simply Parco (YCh 533, 1230 Percy, 1300 Ebor, etc.); v. park .
