Etymology

Measborough Dike, Measbrough 1774 Fairb, Measbro Dyke 1839TA ; this stream, as it runs down to the Dearne, forms the boundary between Ardsley and Barnsley; the name therefore probably repre- sents an OE  (ge)mǣres-burh 'fort on the boundary'; its meaning is paralleled by that of Masborough 186supra ; for the form cf. Maze Brook (RNs.).
