Etymology

'Farmstead on the spur of land', v. hōh , tūn ; the place is on the edge of a hill. 'Glass' from the glassworks here; cf. 'at the Glasshouse at Houghton near Pontefract is made…all sorts of Window Glass' (1740 LdsM 84).
