Etymology

'Enclosure of Cūla's folk' from an OE  Cūlinga -worð , with shortening of Cūl to Cul - (represented by Cul -, Col -) in the polysyllable. The basis of the folk-name Cūlingas is an OE  pers.n. Cūla , which is not recorded but appears to be the source of Cooling K 112 (Culingas BCS 326, Colinges DB), Culham O 150, and other p.ns. and is from a Germ  root kūl - 'swollen'. v. -ingas , worð .
