Etymology

v. Askham Bryan 233supra , from which it is distinguished as 'Richard', possibly, as Moorman suggested, from Richard Earl of Cornwall who had great estates in Yorkshire in the thirteenth century, but more probably from Richard Malebys de Askham mentioned in 1284 YI
