Etymology

'Homestead near the ash-tree', v. æsc , replaced by ON  askr, hām .The affix Brian (to distinguish it from Askham Richard 234infra ) is the OIr  pers.n. Brian , borrowed as ON  Brján (Revue Celtique xliv, 41); here it is the pers.n. used traditionally in the family which held Askham; amongst them were Brianus filius Alani (1195 Abbr), Brian son of Scotland Hy 3 Misc, Brianus fil. Alani (1285 KI, 1303 KF 222), Brianus fil. Gilberti de Stapelton (1328 FF) and Brian de Stapelton (1428 FA).
