Etymology

'Farmstead associated with Earda', v. -ing 4 , tūn . On the unrecorded OE  pers.n. Earda cf. Ardsley i, 290supra and for the regular spelling of this as ME  Ard - cf. Armley iii, 210supra . The early replacement of Ard - by Arth - is probably due to ON influence (cf. Phonol. § 40). For the affix Nun - cf. Arthington Nunnery infra .
