It is named from mare Wide vocatum juxta Wellemagnum et spatiosum lateribus aquarum et liberos exitus habens c. 1300 GestH 390, piscaria de Wyde 1277Ely . Hence, probably, 'the broad stream' (flowing from Widemere , 'the broad lake'). v. lacu .
