Etymology

Ranson Moor is Ravenesho (fen )1227 Ch, Ramyshomore 1345Wren , Ransmer '1346ElyF , Rameshammor ', Raunshammor (e )1389ElyCouch , Ransome moor (e )1618SewersA , 1637 BedL, Ransummore 1621SewersD , Ransonmo (o )re 1636 BedL, 1690 Lea, Ranseymoore 1656BLAcct , Ramson 1660AdvProc . Probably 'marsh by raven's ridge or spur' or by that of a man called Hrafn , v. hræfn , hōh . To the southeast, towards the village, the land rises and this was probably the hōh .South-west of Doddington, in a somewhat similar position, we have How Moor infra 253. Some of the forms are probably due to confusion with ramson , ransom , 'wild garlic.'
