Cut Mill

Early-attested site in the Parish of Puttenham

Historical Forms

  • Cutmyll 1551 Pat
  • Cut Corner, Cut Mill 1680 Seller

Etymology

Cut Mill is Cutmyll 1551 Pat, Cut Corner , Cut Mill 1680 Seller.Cf. Fetcham Mill supra 77. Brayley (v, 241 n.) says that the mill was called Cotte mill or Cutt-mill because it was given by John de Cotte or Cutte (t. Ed 1) as part of the dowry of his daughter. If this is correct it is difficult to account for the family name except on the basis that John was named from the cutte at his mill.
