Etymology

This is probably the same name as Mitcham supra 51, though the second element may be ham rather than hamm .The development to Mickle - in place of Mitch (el )-, may be due to greater persistence of the l , with consequent stopping of the preceding c . The pronunciation may also have been affected by the dedication of the church to St Michael .
