Etymology

Burford Bridge and Lodge is Bureford 1294Ass (p), Burg(h)ford , Burhgforde 1311 BM, Burford bridge 1534 LP, Burfoote 1592 SrWills. v. burh , ford . There are no remains here now, but there may once have been some stronghold or the like guarding the narrow passage of the Mole here through the gap in the North Downs. Possibly it corresponded to a more northerly burh at Norbury infra 82.
