Etymology

Fetcham Mill is referred to as molendinum quod vocatur Cutte 1293AddCh , water mill called Cutt Mill 1504 M and B, and was the home of Deonis ate Mulle (1294Ass ). This is an early example of a name, discussed in PN Wo 91, s. n. Cutmill . Cf. also PN Wo xliii, PN Sx vol. i, xlii, PN D vol. i, lii, PN Nth 103.All these examples make it clear that we have reference to a mill with an artificial cut for the conveyance of water.
