Etymology

Hydecroft is Hydescroft t. Hy 8MinAcct . This place and Hydehurst close at hand (Hiders al. Athide 1583FF ) must be associated with the family of Richard de la Hyde (1263Ass ) and Thomas ate Hyde (1332 SR). It would seem that the second holding was known indifferently as At hyde and Hiders , the latter perhaps being derived from a surname Hider derived from Hide .Cf. the history of such surnames s. n. Bridger's Pond (PN Sx 89) and Ryde Fm supra 148. For Hydehurst cf. Introd. xxv.
