Etymology

Cotland Fm. No forms have been noted, but there is little doubt that we have here an example as an actual place-name of the term cotland , frequent in Surrey documents. The word, which is on record from c. 1150 (NED), means “the piece of arable land, about 5 acres, held along with his 'cot' by the OE cottar or cotset.”
