Etymology

'The eg or marshy land of Beornmund ,' with early loss of n between two consonants. The place lies low in the neighbourhood of the Thames, and there was formerly much marshy land. The area was intersected by streams which almost surrounded the village. After having developed naturally to Barmsey , the old spelling was restored as in Rotherhithe infra 28.
