Etymology

This place near the Sa border must be associated with High & Childs Ercall Sa which have Erkal (e )we 1241 FF and Erkalawe 1242 Fees and several parallel forms; the first el. is common to both the St and Sa forms which Ekwall DEPN suggests is an old Welsh name of the district, though he does not specify further. The second el. is bearu (bearwe dat. sg.) 'wood, grove'.
