Etymology

'Ketil's outlying farmstead', v. þorp , cf. Ab Kettleby and Eye Kettleby Lei. The OScand  pers.n. Ketill is an original by-name, cf. OIcel  ketill 'a cauldron, a cauldron-shaped helmet'. It was common in Norway, Iceland and Denmark throughout the medieval period, v. SPNLY 166–70. The p.n. appears compounded in later minor forms as Ketilthorpe Grange 1516 (1684) Wright, Kettylthorpphalle 1539 MinAcct, Kettlethorpe Hall 1545 LP, Kelthorp Farm 1769EnclA , v. grange , hall .
