Etymology

'The western estate', v. west , tūn . Edith Weston was a royal estate, once part of the dower lands of Edith (Ēadgȳð ), queen of Edward the Confessor. Its name indicates its westerly relationship to the royal manor of Ketton. Later 14th century affixes confuse Queen Edith with the Anglo-Saxon saint Edith. For the prosthetic n of Saxton's prefix, cf. N ed and N oll for Edward and Oliver.
