Etymology
The original form of this name may have been *sænget , 'place cleared by burning.' Cf. bærnet , whence Barnet in Herts and Mx (PN Herts 70). *sænget also occurs in Sencley (or St Chloe) in Minchinhampton (PN Gl 136).
