Etymology

Battle Edge (6″) is Bateling 1435–6 Burford, Batelenche 1551–2Survey , Battledge Field 1706 Burford, Batledge 1795EnclA . This is considered locally to be the site of the battle of Beorg feorda , which was considered to have been fought at Burford (v. 310–11): it is accordingly marked “Site of Battle A.D. 752” on the 1919 edition of the O.S. 1″ map. From the above forms, however, it appears that the modern form has been evolved by recent popular etymology from an original name in which hlinc was compounded with an uncertain first element.
