Etymology

Poffley End takes name from Pouwele 1278–9 RH (p). Probably 'Pohha 's stream,' v. w(i)elle. Poughill Co, which has the same etymology, is pronounced [pɔfil]. The same name in the form Pochwele occurs 1300 Wych, on the west boundary of Wychwood, about four miles away: it is not possible to identify the two.
