Etymology

Stanhope Fm is Stanhope 1524FF , 1528 NtIpm, Stanhope Closse 1535 VE, Stanhopp closes oth. Woodhouse oth. Southwood closes 1579 Moulton. In 1377 (FF ) we have mention of a John de Stanhop '. As there is no hop or valley here, the name is probably manorial rather than local in origin, the family having perhaps come from Stanhope (Du).
