Hy 8MinAcct , Boffit Bridge c. 1620 CoRec, Bowthwaite in Selston c. 1650Rental . This would seem to be a compound of ODan  boþ, 'booth, dwelling' and þveit , 'parcel of land, paddock,' hence 'piece of land by the booth.'
