Etymology

The 1177 and 1223 forms point to an original Wændeles leah , 'Wændel 's clearing or wood.' Cf. Wensdon Hill (PN BedsHu 114), Wellingborough (PN Nth 114), Wandsworth (PN Sr 36) and Wallington (PN Herts 168).
