Debdhill Fm and Debd Hill

Early-attested site in the Parish of Misterton

Etymology

Debdhill Fm and Debd Hill (6″). Cf. Depedale 1286NewsteadB .'Deep valley.' Debd Hill is a low but well-marked hill rising to 50 ft. just south of Debdhill Fm. Possibly the farm was called Depedale by way of a jest. This by a natural phonetic development may have become Debdale and then re-interpreted as Debd Hill , Debdale being taken to be the colloquial form of Debd Hill .
