Etymology

Martin is Martune 1086 DB, 1154–69 (1327) Ch, Marton (a )c. 1175 (17th) Dodsworth et passim to 1515 NtIpm, with variant spelling Marton (e ), Marthon 1191–3 France, 1201 Dugd iv, Marton juxta Bautre 1332FF , Merteyn 1541 LP. 'Boundary farm,' v. (ge)mære, tun . The place lies near Bawtry on the Yorkshire border. Cf. Martin (PN W 402) on the Hampshire-Wiltshire border.
