Etymology

Hexgreave Park is boscus de Hekkesgrave c. 1240 Ebor, 13thWhiteBk , park of Hekes 1258 Pat, park of Hekesgreve 1335 Cl, 1364Cor , Hexgrave 1477 Cl, Hexgref 1533 Wills, Hexgreve 1535 VE, c. 1540 L, Heckgrove 1585 ParReg, Hexgrave Park t. Jas 1 ECP, Exgreve 1613 Southwell Cath. Chapter Acts. The second element in the name is clearly the common Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire greave from græfe , 'thicket.' hekkes is the plural of hekke , used of some wooden framework (a variant of hatch ), which is recorded under Heckdyke supra 39. The exact sense is uncertain. Here there can be no association with water.
