Jas 1 ECP, Exgreve 1613 Southwell Cath. Chapter Acts. The second element in the name is clearly the common Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire greave from græfe , 'thicket.' hekkes is the plural of hekke , used of some wooden framework (a variant of hatch ), which is recorded under Heckdyke supra 39. The exact sense is uncertain. Here there can be no association with water.
