Etymology

Wash Bridge is Wath Bridge c. 1620 CoRec, Wash Bridge 1770EnclA and may be the Grymesbrig ' inter Wodeburgh et Epperston of 1280 (Ass ). The 17th-century spelling, if not a clerical blunder, points to ON  vað, 'ford.' The earlier name is 'Grim 's bridge.'Cf. Grimesmoor in Woodborough near by (infra 180).
