Etymology

This place-name, like Perlethorpe infra 91, was probably at first simply Thorpe . It derives its first element from the family of Ralf Coshart who had rebelled against Richard I in 1194, and whose land of Cossardtorp had therefore been taken into the king's hand (1195 P). A Henry Cossard is mentioned in connection with the place t. Henry 3 (HMC Var vii) and in the Blyth Cartulary (13th).
